fplida carries the published structure of 44 datasets: 43 PLIDA datasets and the BLADE module. Together they hold 72,656 variable occurrences, which reduce to 18,540 distinct dataset-and-variable pairs.

The same variable often appears in many tables of the same dataset. Each dataset page lists the distinct variables once and records where each one appears.

All datasets

Grouped by the agency that supplies the data. COMBINED and CORE are derived from several agencies.

Reading the value support status

Each variable carries one of four statuses, recording where its values came from.

  • sourced — the codes come from a published classification or code list, named under Value source.
  • guessed — the codes are inferred from the variable’s name and description, not from a published list. A variable whose name ends _STATE is given the Australian state and territory codes on that basis alone. The generated column holds plausible values of the right shape, but the source does not confirm them. Treat them as a placeholder, not a mapping.
  • unsupported — research looked for a value domain and found nothing defensible, so the synthetic column is written as typed missing rather than given invented codes. Seven occurrences reach this bar.
  • not_applicable — the variable belongs to a survey, which is outside the value-assessment scope. The structure is present; the values are not assessed.

A status describes the registry, not the fidelity of the generated column. Even for a sourced variable it does not guarantee that a canonical companion file populates that column.

An empty value list does not always mean an unknown domain. Some published classifications are too large to carry here — mesh blocks run to 358,010 codes — and some could only be sampled, which is not the same as knowing the domain. In both cases the domain, its source and its size are recorded, and Value definition says which case applies.
